Earthworm castings have been a secret weapon of avid gardeners and plant enthusiast for ages. And because of their ability to dramatically enhance plants health and growth, many commercial horticultural growers use them as well.

Castings provide essential nutrients needed for plant growth. They are a concentrated source of calcium, nitrogen, magnesium, phosphates, and potash in a form readily available to plants. They will not burn even the most delicate plants. They are high in organic matter, humus, beneficial organisms, bacteria and microbes from the worm’s digestive process. They are completely safe to all indoor and outdoor plants, pets, and people.

Earthworm castings are a viable alternative to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides that can cause soil degradation, tainted groundwater, and environmental damage.

Earthworm castings do some pretty remarkable things in the soil. The regulate the availability of essential plant nutrients and enhance fertilizers. They are teeming with beneficial microorganisms, enzymes, and humic acids. They stimulate the natural activity of beneficial soil microorganisms and bacteria.

Earthworm castings also do some pretty remarkable things for plants. They stimulate root growth, plant development, flowering, and improve fruit set and quality. They promote stress tolerance and pest and disease resistance. They invigorate and rejuvenate potted plants and perennials. They naturally improve plant health and appearance. They enhance germination and early growth of seedlings and cuttings.

Tips for using earthworm castings:
Use Sparingly. Earthworm castings won’t burn plants. However due to their powerful biological activity, a little bit goes a long way.

Create a healthy living soil out of sterile potting soil. Potting soils and typically made from lifeless, inert ingredients or are steam sterilized. Sterile soils are not healthy soils. Incorporate earthworm castings to ensure living, healthy soil.

Enhance either chemical or organic fertilizers. Earthworm castings regulate the availability of essential plant nutrients and enhance the action of fertilizers, whether chemical or organic.

Help for sick plants. Castings can invigorate and rejuvenate stressed plants and can help suppress some plant diseases.

Keep the soil healthy after applying chemicals. Synthetic chemical applications may harm or deplete beneficial microorganisms in the soil. Adding earthworm castings ensures that your soil will rapidly bounce back to good health after treatment.

For seedling germination and plant propagation. Earthworm castings are safe and gentle and won’t burn even sensitive seedlings, yet they effectively enhance germination and promote healthy plants. Mix 1 part castings with 4 to 5 parts of your favorite germination or propagation medium before use.

For houseplants and container plant: University research has documented dramatic improvements in the health and quality of plants grown in pots containing earthworm castings. For new port, mix 1 part castings with a4 to 5 parts of your favorite potting soil before transplanting. For established pots or containers, top-dress monthly with 1 to 2 tablespoons of earthworm castings per quart of potting soil.

For annual vegetables, flowers, and ornamentals: Earthworm castings work wonders in vegetable and flower gardens. At planting work ½ to 1 inch castings into plant holes or seed furrows before placing seeds or seedlings. Side dress monthly with a few tablespoons per plant of ¼ to ½ cup linear foot.

For perennials: For new transplants, work 1 part castings with 4 to 5 parts soil into plant holes. In the spring and fall, work ½ to 1 inch into soil above the root zone. During the growing season, side-dress monthly with a few tablespoons per plant, or ¼ to ½ cup per linear foot.
